Thousands of marijuana plants seized from Sacramento-area homes

Published On: 09-06-2017 in Category: addiction, drug abuse, marijuana

Growing suspicious and alarmed by the unusually high electricity bills, federal authorities on July 26, 2017, conducted raids on nine Sacramento-area homes in Roseville, Elverta and Elk Grove, which led to the seizure of 7,750 marijuana plants. Consequently, nine suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal marijuana operations, media reports said.

The federal authorities, which comprised several Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and other law enforcement officials, sought the services of a Mandarin interpreter to communicate with some residents, in whose homes there was sufficient evidence of high-tech marijuana grows. The evidence included cannabis plants, bags of cannabis, high power lights and fans.

The investigation commenced in October 2016 when DEA Special Agent Alicia Ramirez observed a phenomenal surge in the monthly power consumption of three different homes in the Sacramento area belonging to same owner Xiu Ping Li. This prompted Ramirez to investigate the reasons for the sudden spike in electricity use and check if the houses were being used to produce and process cannabis.

Marijuana is addictive

In the wake of the growing clamor to decriminalize marijuana nationwide, experts fear that dangerous and habit-forming nature of the drug will get overlooked. Here, it’s noteworthy that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has neither recognized nor approved the medicinal value of marijuana. It continues to remain in the category of Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) because of the immense potential for abuse. The high rates of pot addiction across the country can be attributed to its easy availability. Besides, being viewed as a benign drug, it boasts high social popularity, which surpasses all racial and socio-economic barriers.

Although instances of people afflicted with marijuana addiction don’t make it to the headlines, there are considerable health hazards linked to its abuse. People on the whole should be educated about the addictive and mind-altering nature of marijuana and other cannabis products. Studies have revealed that delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a neurotoxin present in marijuana, is the cause of psychoactive changes in the human body, which leads to addiction and compulsive drug-seeking behaviors in addicts. Marijuana also adversely impact their physical and mental health. Estimates of the number of people addicted to marijuana across the U.S. are monumental.
