Sacramento man killed at red light in suspected DUI crash
A 60-year-old man from Sacramento succumbed to his injuries after an alleged drunk driver triggered a chain-reaction accident on May 26 at a red light on Elkhorn Boulevard and Watt Avenue. The drunk driver, 25, who was in a Ford F250 hit the rear of Honda Fit waiting at the red light, which, in turn, banged into a Nissan Versa.
Viktor Gerez, who was in his Honda Fit, suffered fatal injuries. Four others at the scene of the crash were rushed to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The deceased was a father of eight with many grandchildren. His son, Aleksandr Gerez, said his father had migrated to the United States to provide a better life for the family.
Drunk driving is a major concern across US
Driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol is a big problem all over the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more people die in car crashes each year in the U.S. than in other high-income countries. Unfortunately, this can be attributed to the spike in the number of people engaging themselves in binge drinking and attending rave parties where alcohol and drugs are freely available.
Drunk driving poses great threat not only to the driver, but also to the public at large. Alcohol inhibits an individual’s decision-making ability on the roads. He or she fails to react swiftly to the changes in the environment and is unable to make those tough maneuvers behind the wheel. Studies suggest that the presence of alcohol or drugs in a person’s system is the main cause of road rage cases and motor crashes nationwide. Statistics show a remarkable percentage of motorists who have been prosecuted on earlier occasions for DUI, often tend to repeat their offenses. The number of repeat offenses is a clear indicator that these individuals aren’t getting the right kind of counseling and treatment for alcoholism.
Moreover, a large number of Americans living in California are economically well-off and have access to a wide range of options to procure alcohol. Nevertheless, a fine or a monetary penalty for breaking the law is not that much of a deterrent to many young people in this part of the country. Notably, excessive consumption of alcohol on a single occasion or over a period of time can cause multiple health problems and injuries. It hinders the brain’s communication pathway, which in turn adversely impacts parts of the brain that control movement, memory and judgment, which are essential for driving.
