In early April, Illinois police arrested a Sacramento man on charges of drug trafficking. According to the Illinois State Police department, 48-year-old Matthew Remling was caught with over 900 grams of cocaine.

A state police trooper pulled over Remling for an equipment violation on the Interstate 80 in LaSalle County and while he was being investigated, drugs were discovered in his vehicle. After being booked on the charges, Remling was moved to the LaSalle County Jail. If proven guilty, he could receive a preliminary sentence ranging from 9-40 years for a Super Class X felony.

Drug menace in Sacramento

Drug abuse and addiction are a growing reality in Sacramento. It is no longer confined to the dark and dingy back alleys of crime-ridden neighborhoods of the city. In fact, the menace has now reached the doorsteps of Granite Bay, Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Rocklin, which are some of the most affluent and unsuspicious residential neighborhoods in the Sacramento area.

Middle school and high school children in upscale communities are now being introduced to drugs. Although marijuana has always been the drug of choice in Sacramento, methamphetamine and heroin have gained wide popularity recently due to the opioid abuse crisis. Heroin and prescription opioids seem to be the drug of choice among young users.

Moreover, fentanyl, a synthetic opioid nearly 50 times more potent than heroin, is now causing more overdose-related fatalities in Sacramento. According to the Sacramento County Division of Public Health, street Norco tablets combined with the fast-acting synthetic opiate fentanyl has been a leading cause of devastation in the Sacramento County since 2016.

Sacramento, together with the counties of Fresno, Kern, Merced, Modesto, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Stockton, constitutes the Central Valley of California that is the nation’s agricultural hub witnessing a cycle of periodical surges in migrant labor. This region, covered by the Central Valley High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), is infamous for large-scale production of ice methamphetamine and illegal cannabis cultivation operations.

Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) control the production, transportation and wholesale distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana in the region. Further, they also regularly smuggle large quantities of powder cocaine and black tar heroin from Mexico into the region for distribution. The excellent infrastructure, transportation facilities and direct access to drug sources located in Mexico and Canada enable cross-border drug cartels to transport colossal amounts of illegal substances into and through the Central Valley HIDTA region for local use and to drug markets nationwide.
